The function and operation of the club is formalised in its Constitution and Policies which are routinely reviewed by the committee. These can be found in full on the club website in the folder ‘About the Club’ which is subdivided as follows;

Mountaineering Scotland
For our membership we get :-
– £15m liability insurance.
– 4 issues of the Scottish Mountaineering magazine per year.
– Monthly newsletter.
– Discounts from retailers, accommodation etc.
– Subsidised mountain skill courses.
– Access to mountaineering huts.
– Volunteering opportunities.

Hostelling Scotland
For our membership we get :-
– Club waiver on £3.50 booking pppn booking fee when booking Hostelling Scotland venue (Club Events only).
– Access to over 4000 hostels in 90 countries globally through dual membership with Hostelling International.

As a charity, Hostelling Scotland provides children, young people and adults opportunities to explore Scotland and use hostels through various programmes.

Whilst the main reason for joining Hostelling Scotland is to support club bookings membership may be used for other club bookings. To book a hostel in Scotland you should only need the membership number at the time of booking. To use hostels elsewhere you probably need to bring the physical membership card with you.

The membership card number is available from the SMHC Treasurer. ahe card will be retained by the SMHC Treasurer, who you should collect from if you need it.


NEMT (North East Mountain Trust)
NEMT is an umbrella organisation representing the environmental interests of mountaineers and hill-walkers.

For our membership we can :-
– Find out about up-to-date national, political and local land management issues.
– Take part in informed debate and consultation on mountain and wild land issues.
– Bring new issues to NEMT’s attention and become involved in doing something about them.
