21st July 2019 – Ben Wyvis

Map 20 – Grid Ref 463684

Ben Wyvis is a very prominent hill to the north of Inverness. It boasts a main Munro summit Glas Leathad Mor (1046m), 3 subsidiary tops and a top demoted from the original Munro list. The stalking season will be in force and the estates prefers ascent and descent by a specific route which starts at Garbat on the A835 where there is adequate parking. Initially the ascent is up through the trees on a path which used to be boggy and may still be. Once out into the open there is a fairly gruelling ascent up the shoulder of An Cabar. From there it is a fairly easy undulating stroll to the summit. For those with an adventurous spirit a continuation out to Tom a’ Choinnich, Glas Leathad Beag and Fiaclach will extend the day but makes for a laborious return.

For the Corbett baggers, Little Wyvis (GR 430635) is a shorter option, also starting from Garbat but takes just over a couple of hours to gain the summit, so it would be possible to drive round and bag another Corbett, Beinn Liath Mhor a’ Ghuibhais Li (GR 281713). About 2 hours to the summit.

For those downsizing, there are a number of Grahams in the area.

Anyone wishing to make a weekend of it should make their own arrangements. The Aultguish Inn has a bunkhouse and B & B will be available in the area for those who prefer more comfortable accommodation.

There is also the camp site at Contin where a few folk have already booked in.
