15th July 2018 – The Northern Corries
Map 36, Grid Ref 990040
The Northern Corries sitting on the edge of the 1245m. Cairngorm plateau overlooking Strathspey. Coire Cas, Coire an t Sneachda 1176m. And Coire Lochain 1215m. being the highest point of the coire headwall. They offer a huge amount of climbing with excellent routes at all grades from easy gullies to testing classic cutting edge desperates.
The Fiacall Ridge offers an exposed crest separating the two corries, an easy ascent brings you to a minor top on the ridge about 700ft. where the real scrambling begins. The exposure from being high above the two corries on either side adds to the overall impact of the scramble.
The Northern Corries offer great walking and a round taking in the headwalls of Coire an Lochain, Coire an t- Sneachda, Coire Cas and Cairngorm itself with a return to the Ski Centre car park down Sron na Aonaich after a gluvine in the Ptarmigan is a great way to spend the day. An even better way is to head for the Fiacaill ridge of Coire an – t- Sneachda which is on the west side of the coire. After an easy start the ridge turns into a wonderful scramble breaking out onto the plateau between Cairn Lochan and Stob Coire an – t – Sneachda. There is a bypass route for those who feel less comfortable on this type of terrain. Once on the plateau ascend Cairngorm as previously described. You will definitely have deserved your gluvine and the descent will help to work it off.
Meet as usual at the Market Square car park at 0700 but let John Mcpherson know you intend coming by phoning him on 07772981042
